A mother and calf Humpback Whale on their annual migration north. Every year Humpback Whales make the enduring migration from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to warmer waters to breed and give birth. Calves will stay with their mother for the first year of their life, feeding off her high fat milk and learning how to breach and mimic their mother’s behaviour. Mothers are very protective and will display aggressive behaviour to other animals including male Humpback Whales, Orcas, Sharks and Humans if they feel a threat to their calf.
