A Whaleshark opens its wide mouth to engulf a feed. With their mouths reaching 1.5m wide and having over 300 rows of teeth some may fear these beasts as viscous predators. Their throat however is only 2.5cm wide and their teeth less than 5mm. They spend their days feeding on tiny plankton. These Sharks will swim along taking in large amounts of water through their mouth, and filtering it out through their gills, capturing desired plankton with their fine mesh gill rakers. They can filter 6000L of water every hour and even a juvenile can consume over 20 kg of plankton every day. Plankton refers to all organisms that are carried by tides and currents and cannot swim well enough to move against these forces. Most marine creatures start their life as “plankton”.
